Initial Educator Certificate

The initial educator certificate is the first level certificate issued as part of Connecticut's three tier continuum, and is valid for a period of three years. To qualify for the initial educator certificate, an applicant must fulfill all preparation and eligibility requirements, including testing, in the endorsement areas requested, and one of the following:

- Has completed a planned program of preparation at a regionally accredited institution in the field and at the grade level for which the certification endorsement is requested.

OR

Interim Educator Certificate

The interim educator certificate may be issued at the initial or provisional level and is valid for one calendar year. There are two types of interim educator certificates: (1) the nonrenewable interim (initial/provisional) educator certificate and (2) the interim (initial/provisional) educator certificate.

- The nonrenewable interim educator certificate is issued with Connecticut test deferrals and/or specific course deficiencies as provided by certification regulations.
- The interim educator certificate is issued with specific course deficiencies as provided by certification regulations.

Certificate of Eligibility

Effective July 1, 1998, the certificate of eligibility (COE) is no longer available. Any individual holding a certificate of eligibility will need to apply for the initial educator certificate prior to the expiration date on the COE.

Provisional Educator Certificate

The provisional educator certificate is the second level certificate issued as part of Connecticut's three tier continuum, and is valid for a period of eight years. To qualify for the provisional educator certificate, an applicant must fulfill all preparation and eligibility requirements for the initial educator certificate, including tests, in the endorsement areas requested, and one of the following:

- Has completed ten months of successful appropriate experience under the initial educator certificate, interim initial educator certificate, or durational shortage area permit (DSAP) in a Connecticut public school, and has successfully completed the Teacher Education And Mentoring (TEAM) program, as made available by the Board.

Professional Educator Certificate

The professional educator certificate is the third level certificate issued as part of Connecticut's three tier continuum and is valid for a period of five years. To qualify for the professional educator certificate, an applicant must complete the following requirements:

- Has completed 30 school months of successful appropriate experience in a Connecticut public or approved nonpublic school under the provisional teaching or provisional educator certificate.

AND

- Has completed any additional course requirements, as prescribed by Connecticut certification regulations, for the endorsement requested.

Continuation of the professional educator certificate requires the completion of nine continuing education units (CEUs) during the five-year period in which the individual holds a professional educator certificate. One semester hour of graduate credit completed at an approved college or university is equivalent to 1.5 CEUs. (See Fact Sheet #107, Continuing Education Units, for more information.)

Please note - Upon application, a consultant will determine your eligibility for certification. The type and duration of the certificate issued will depend on your education and experience.
