Criminal History Record Check - (Fingerprinting)

Connecticut requires that any person (teacher, administrator, special service staff member, teacherís aide, custodian, cafeteria employee, etc.) who is hired by a local or regional board of education submit to a state and national criminal history record check within the first 30 days of the date of employment.

In addition, effective July 1, 2010, in accordance with Public Act 09-01, Section 8, any candidate in a preparation program leading to certification as a teacher, special service, etc, who has not had a criminal history background check, must do so at least 30 days prior to being placed in a school for clinical experiences such as field experience, student teaching or internship.

The process includes the checking of fingerprints by the State Police Bureau of Identification and the F.B.I.  The results of the criminal history record checks (both state and federal) are reported to the employing school district.  If the district receives notice of a conviction of a crime by a person holding a certificate, authorization or permit issued by the State Board of Education, the district shall notify the Bureau Educator Standards and Certification.

For questions concerning the criminal history record checks, candidates must contact the Certification Officer for their educator preparation program or the personnel officer for the local school district for advisement.

Designated officials from Connecticut educator preparation programs and Connecticut public school districts assigned to handle the criminal history record checks for educator preparation candidates may contact us via email at
