Teaching and Learning

The Connecticut State Department of Education supports its school districts with the development of rigorous and relevant curriculum, PK-12. Curricular development takes place at the district level through meaningful, ongoing, data-informed discussions involving districtwide educators.

Supporting district-based curriculum development, the state provides resources to include frameworks with standards and grade-level expectations, templates for curriculum, and sample lessons and assessments. State-provided professional development, supplementary resources, and Bureau of Teaching and Learning staff are also available to assist.

Career Pathways, an approach to secondary education and postsecondary planning, is designed to engage each student in the creation of a flexible, individualized Student Success Plan that includes rigorous academic coursework, credit-bearing college courses, related electives, and structured external work-based learning experiences within the context of a chosen career pathway.

Early Literacy initiatives provide support to districts and schools toward creating optimal early learning environments in kindergarten through third grade to ensure that every child is reading at or above grade level.

Literacy Across the Content Areas offers resources for grades 4-12 to support Connecticut’s literacy goal that each student becomes an independent, skilled, lifelong reader, writer, listener, speaker, viewer, and presenter.
