Health Promotion Services/School Nurse

Health Promotion Services/School Nurse Program provides consultation to school nurses, school nurse leaders, school administrators and the community regarding the health and safety of students. This consultation and technical assistance includes addressing the provisions of health services during the school day and the promotion of health and wellness activities that support student achievement. Professional development programs are periodically organized to further assist and support school nurses.

Definition of School Nursing

"School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students.  To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning." *Adopted by the National Association of School Nurses, June 1999

Survey on School Health Services in Connecticut

  • The American School Health Association is a multidisciplinary organization committed to safeguarding the health of school-aged children. This site provides resources, professional development opportunities, publications, and other pertinent school health information.
  • The Association of School Nurses of Connecticut is the website for the state school nurse professional organization. This site provides information about school nursing, professional development and Connecticut- specific information.
  • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is the recognized lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people at home and abroad. This website offers a wide array of health information on public health issues ranging from bioterrorism to chronic disease prevention. It also includes a web page for youth called BAM (Body and Mind Kids Page).
